Justicia gendarussa is an erect, branched, smooth undershrub 0.8-1.5 m tall. Their leaves are lance-shaped, 7-14 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, and pointed at the ends.

Small Flowered Ixora is a very different Ixora in that it a tree, not a shrub, and it has flowers much smaller than Red Ixora. Ixora arborea is a small, much branched tree.
